Symbion Systems, Inc. was founded in 2002 to develop and market standardized instrument control and data management software for the analytical instrument and process analysis industries. Its three principles, Dr. Mike Doyle, Norm Jennings, and Dr. Mike Power brought to the company broad experience and knowledge in the fields of spectroscopy, process analysis, control engineering, and software design, laying the groundwork the Company's focused, market-driven business approach. They have been able to assemble a development team uniquely suited to rapid development in a quality-centered environment.
Symbion Systems is a sister company of Axiom Analytical, Inc., also formed by Dr. Mike Doyle and Norm Jennings. Axiom is a widely respected manufacturer of sample interfacing equipment for on-line process analysis. As a result of many years of experience working with the process analytical groups at the largest chemical companies, Axiom's founders came to realize that the process analysis field was being retarded by the lack of standardized software capable of meeting the generally accepted requirements for process analysis while interfacing with a wide range of instruments. After discussing this problem with the current software providers, Doyle and Jennings realized that, if the problem was to be solved, they would have to take the initiative themselves. They were soon able to identify Dr. Mike Power as the ideal person to head up the software development program.
Dr. Power came to Symbion with a unique combination of qualifications, not least of which was that fact that he had independently conceived of the need for a program such as Symbion and was already working on its development. Mike has a PhD in Control Engineering from Penn State University and spent several years - first at Argonne National Labs and later as an independent consultant - designing process control software for the nuclear and physics communities. At Argonne, he headed up a project to provide spectroscopic process monitoring software for a large-scale hazardous waste incinerator. In initiating this project he quickly came to appreciate the inadequacies of current process analysis software. The work that he carried out in completing this project can, in fact, be viewed as an initial prototype for Symbion-DX. Immediately prior to joining the Symbion team, Mike was the lead developer of a major reactor control system in the highly regulated nuclear industry. He was able to apply his experience in both of these projects directly to developing the Symbion architecture while assembling a high-level team with the combination of qualifications needed to execute all aspects of the program.
In undertaking its development program, the Symbion team was able to capitalize on its long-standing relationships with key process analytical workers in both the chemical and pharmaceutical industries. These individuals have shared the benefits of their knowledge and experience by providing detailed user requirements and by evaluating Symbion's performance at every stage of development. The result is a software design fine-tuned to meet the most demanding customer expectations.
